San Carlos Children’s Theater awarded grant from Bill Graham Foundation

Funds to support “Friends Play Group” a theater based program for children with delayed social skills.

December 29, 2011 (San Carlos) - The San Carlos Children’s Theater (SCCT) is honored to announce it is the recipient of a grant from the Bill Graham Supporting Foundation of the Jewish Community Endowment Fund.  The $500 gift will fund SCCT’s Friends Play Group (FPG) a social skills workshop for children ages 6 - 9 years old.

Designed for socially delayed children and those on the autism spectrum, SCCT’s Friends Play Group is a theater based social skills program that uses theater arts and drama activities tailored to help children become better social thinkers.  The program is unique in its use of video - the instructors film the children as they demonstrate their newly learned skills.  At the end of the session, the children invite their parents to a "movie premier" where they see themselves participating in skits and games specifically written to enhance their social understanding.  Each child is given a take-home DVD that can help reinforce their social skills each time they watch it.

The Winter 2012 session of Friends Play Group is scheduled to begin Monday, January 23, 2012 from 5:00 - 6:00 p.m. at the Redwood Shores Library, and can accept a maximum of eight children.

Space is limited, and sign up forms are available at the SCCT website and the Friends Play Group website.  For more information about fees, scheduling, curriculum and additional play groups for younger or older children, call Shelley Frost at 650/906-8296 or e-mail at shelley@friendsplaygroup.org.

Theater Social Skills Class Welcomes New Teacher

August 17, 2011 (San Carlos) - The San Carlos Children’s Theater (SCCT) welcomes Briana Barrett as their newest teacher in Friends Play Group, a theater-based social skills workshop for children.  Educated at UCLA, and Loyola Marymount University, Barrett is a school psychologist who has taught coping skills and emotional management to children with autism, Asperger’s and emotional disturbances.

In 2009, Friends Play Group was created by sisters Shelley Frost, a drama teacher and videographer, and Linda Young, a special educator.  Barrett says, “I previously worked with Linda, and I knew her as an incredibly passionate and talented professional.  When she approached me and asked me if I would like to join FPG, I jumped at the opportunity.  Once I met Shelley and learned even more about the innovative approach that FPG takes in teaching social skills, I became very excited and eager to become a part of it.  I am looking forward to meeting the participants and to bringing my experience to this wonderful group!"
